Popolopen Torne
Duration: 3-5 Hours
Difficulty: Moderate - Hard Elevation Gain: 1,200+ Ft. Distance: 5-9 Miles Known locally as "The Torne," this great loop hike is located just North of Bear Mountain. It starts at the hiker overflow lot near the Fort Montgomery State Historical Site on 9W.
Hike along Popolopen Gorge, enjoying the sights and sounds of the river with nice rolling terrain. It is a sharp climb to the top of Popolopen Torne, with some fun rock scrambles near the top. No rock climbing gear or experience necessary, but you will need to use both your hands and feet to get over some of the rocks and boulders. At the top is a bald peak with 360 degree views of the Hudson River and surrounding mountains. There is also a large rock pile at the summit, where people have carried stones to the top in memory of fallen soldiers. After a steep descent, the trail levels out again and follows the other side of the gorge back towards Fort Montgomery. There is a small scenic pond that we can walk around if time permits, adding another mile onto this awesome hike. The trails offer varied terrain from dirt trails, rocks and boulders, and even a few short road walks as the trail passes through a small neighborhood. |
