Breakneck Ridge
Hudson Highlands State Park

Duration: 3-4 Hours
Difficulty: Hard (Steep, Rocky Terrain)
Distance: 3.6 miles
Elevation: 1,230 feet
VIEW AVAILABILITY & BOOK ONLINE
Breakneck is one of the regions most popular hiking trails. It is known as one of the best and toughest hikes in the Hudson Valley. It offers stunning views of the Hudson River and surrounding parkland. The hike starts out with a really fun rock scramble, offering great views all year round that get better with every step. This section is steep, and you will need to use both your hands and feet at times, however no harness or ropes  are needed. The most challenging sections of trail have alternative routes which go around the steepest and most exposed routes, linking back up with the main trail for those who prefer a slightly easier assent.

There are several nice ledges and good spots to take a break or stop for lunch along the way. After ascending over 1200 feet, the trail starts to flatten out, and eventually changes to a nice gradual descent back to 9D forming a loop from where the hike began.

This hike typically takes about 3 hours, but can vary due to the steep and challenging terrain.

Breakneck to Mount Beacon

Extend the Breakneck Ridge route all the way to the Fire Tower on Mount Beacon for a very challenging and long hike. This extended circuit is about 10 miles round trip, has almost 3,000 feet total elevation gain, and typically takes between 5 and 7 hours to complete.
Meeting Location: 430 Breakneck Rd, Beacon, NY, 12508
Hiker parking lot is a dirt lot right past the tunnel on 9D.
